Repeating Courses

Repeating Courses to Improve GPA

Students may repeat a course to improve their grade if the course cannot be taken for additional credit. When a course is repeated, only the highest grade earned will be used to calculate the student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA). All attempts will remain on the student’s official transcript.

This policy applies to courses taken at A&M–San Antonio and to equivalent courses taken at other accredited institutions.

Repeated Courses at A&M–San Antonio

If a student repeats a non‑repeatable course at A&M–San Antonio, the highest grade earned in that course will be included in the GPA calculation.

Repeated Courses at Other Institutions

If a student repeats an equivalent course at another accredited institution, and the course is accepted as an equivalent at A&M–San Antonio, the highest grade earned—from either institution—will be used in the GPA calculation. Transfer courses must meet all institutional transfer‑credit requirements.

Repeating Courses After Graduation

Once a student has graduated, courses may no longer be repeated to improve the GPA for that completed degree. Grades earned after the degree is awarded will not change the GPA associated with that credential.

Transcript Notation

All attempts of a repeated course will appear on the student’s official transcript. When a course attempt is excluded from the GPA calculation, the transcript will display the letter “E” next to that attempt. The “E” indicates that the grade points from that attempt are not included in the cumulative GPA.

Examples

  • A student earns a D in MATH 1314 and later earns a B on a second attempt. The B is used in the GPA; both attempts remain on the transcript, and the first attempt is marked with “E.”
  • A student earns a C in HIST 1301 at A&M–San Antonio and later earns an A in an equivalent course at another accredited college. If accepted as equivalent, the A is used in the GPA.
  • A student earns a B in ENGL 1301 and repeats the course, earning a C. The B remains the grade used in the GPA; the second attempt is marked with “E.”
