Department of Language, Literature, and Arts
Department Description
Language, Literature, and Arts is a multidisciplinary department comprising undergraduate programs in English and Spanish, a Master of Arts program in English, and course offerings in Art and Music. This department administers the Writing Center, the Writing Across the Curriculum Program, and the First-Year Composition Program and contributes to the university’s Core Curriculum, interdisciplinary minors, and teacher certification programs.
Commitments
The Department of Language, Literature, and Arts fosters students’ critical engagement with and production of linguistic, visual, and musical works. Faculty facilitate this engagement through anti-racist and de-colonial pedagogies that support interdisciplinary teaching and experiential learning to develop students’ translingual and transcultural literacies. These pedagogies align with curricular and co-curricular programs that build reciprocal relationships with our community. These relationships prepare students to apply their knowledge in public and professional contexts to effect positive social change in and beyond South Texas. Through this work, we support students as they move forward into a range of rewarding careers, including those as educators responsive to our region.
Requirement for Other-than-English Language Courses
All students registering for other-than-English Language courses as A&M-SA must take an approved language evaluation (WebCAPE, AVANT, CLEP). They will be placed in courses according to their evaluation results and in consultation with academic advising and the Spanish program.
The “Foreign Language” requirements on degree plans may be fulfilled through any other-than-English language courses from A&M-SA or from other regionally accredited institutions. In addition to the beginning, intermediate, and heritage courses (1311,1312, 2311, 2312, 2313, 2315), students with appropriate placement are encouraged to consider taking the following A&M-SA to fulfill the requirement:
