This course is an introduction of human growth across the lifespan. The course explores the different stages of human life that include: pre-and perinatal life, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and the biological, psychological and social changes occurring across time.

This 3-hour course will cover the history of behavioral health, from the middle ages through today. The course will cover the successes and challenges of addressing behavioral health in children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

This 3-hour course will provide students an introduction into the human services profession. This will include topics such as a history of human services, populations who may use these services, and a variety of agencies that utilize human services professionals such as non-profit, community, and government sectors.

This course explores the cultural, physical and socially constructed differences in people. This includes, but is not limited to, effects of social change, cultural patterns, roles of men and women, different lifestyles, ethnic groups, and other special populations.

This 3-hour course will explore the various abusable psychoactive substances. It will also cover approaches to prevention and education of substance use/misuse. Populations include children, adolescents, adults and older adults in a variety of settings. Areas such a schools, community and business are covered.

This 3-hour course will explore ethical issues inherent in the human services milieu including respecting the dignity of clients, valuing diversity, supporting autonomy, and promoting social justice.

EDHS 3332  Interpersonal Skill Developmnt

This 3-hour course will provide students with the skills necessary to develop strong working relationships. They will learn a variety of models of interpersonal relationships. There will be a focus on development of skills essential for effective communication.

EDHS 4301  Assessment Mental Health Child

This course will focus on assessment and mental health of children and adolescents. The focus will include discussions concerning healthy development, risk factors, disease etiology, epidemiology, phenomenology, nosology, and diagnosis. The class will engage in a critical review of common child and adolescent psychopathology while challenging social and cultural assumptions of what constitutes "normal" versus "pathological" behavior, cognition, and emotion.

EDHS 4302  Child and Adolescent Trauma

This course will introduce core concepts (general theory and foundational knowledge) for understanding, assessing and intervening with traumatized children and adolescents. This course will highlight the role of development, culture and empirical evidence in trauma-specific interventions with children, adolescents and their families.

EDHS 4310  Co-occurring Disorders

This 3-hour course will explore the various disorders that often co-occur with respect to substance use/misuse and behavioral disorders. The course will also cover the history of co-occurrence (or dual diagnosis) and treatment. In addition, the challenges with addressing each both dependent and independent of one another.

EDHS 4311  Crisis Intervention

This 3-hour course will cover the different types of crises such as natural, human-induced, and personal. Specific attention will be paid to personal/behavioral health crises. This course will also address the typical responses to crises, how to mitigate its effects, and ways to move individuals forward. An overview of models of crisis intervention will be covered.

EDHS 4320  Field Practicum Children and A

Field practicum is an external training placement creating an opportunity for introductory exposure, experience and supervised practice in the broad scope of activities in working with children, adolescents and families. This is a semester long experience to acclimate to the training site and system, establish relationships with supervisors and other professionals working at the training site.

The purpose of the Healthy Development in Childhood and Adolescence course is to provide students preparing to enter the human services and helping professions with an in-depth understanding of the developmental needs of children and adolescents.

EDHS 4330  Methods for Evaluating Practic

This course discusses the knowledge, skills, perspectives, and reflective practice you will need to effectively evaluate policies and programs. This includes the use of theory, appropriate evaluation tools, creating a focus of evaluation and identify threats to validity.

This course is a focused examination of the health and welfare of children and adolescents in the U.S. This includes factors that determine their health and mental health trajectories, the systems of care, policies, and strategies for improving the quality and effectiveness of this care. We will examine major issues affecting the welfare of children and adolescents beginning with an overview of the ever changing context of children’s lives while reviewing the history of child health and social welfare programs during the past century.

EDHS 4340  Substance Use/Misuse & Beh Hlt

This 3-hour course will cover the various options and levels of care for those with substance use and misuse or behavioral health issues. Areas such as outpatient, partial hospital, inpatient, and residential treatment will be addressed.

EDHS 4350  Field Internship

This 3-hour course will provide students with direct experience in a variety of human services settings that address those with substance use and misuse or behavioral health issues. They will gain knowledge of how these settings assess and intervene to improve those individuals’ quality of life. Students will also be exposed to administrative aspects of the agencies where they are placed.
