Summer Financial Aid

Summer financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans. Some students may have remaining federal aid (Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans ) that was NOT used in full during the current academic year.

If you plan to take summer courses and would like to be considered for financial aid, you do not need to complete a separate application for summer financial aid. We will review all students who are registered to determine eligibility for financial aid in the summer. To be considered, make sure you:

  1. Have filled out the FAFSA.
  2. If you have received financial aid for the Fall/Spring semesters before summer, you will not need to complete a new FAFSA to receive summer financial aid.
  3. Continue to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  4. Enroll for one summer session or at least half-time over the period of both summer sessions combined to be considered for loans.

Texas Grants for Summer

If you received a Texas Grant during the Spring semester, you may be eligible to receive it again this Summer. Eligibility for the TEXAS grant can be found here.

Notification of Offer

Typically, financial aid offers for the summer take place in late April after class registration.

Summer Withdrawal Consequences

According to Federal regulations, financial aid recipients who withdraw from all courses or stop attending classes before the last day of class have not “earned” all of their financial aid that was received for that semester. Because each summer term (Maymester, Summer 10 week, Summer 8 week, First Summer Session and Second Summer session) may be considered by federal regulation its own semester for Return of Title IV (R2T4) purposes, students may have part of their summer aid returned if withdrawing from classes after having completed a session OR if withdrawing while still being enrolled in future sessions.

Students will have an unearned percentage of aid for each part of the term returned during summer. The higher the number of class days completed, the lower the amount of financial aid that must be returned. Once a student has completed more than 60% of the semester, the student is allowed to keep all disbursed aid, even if a withdrawal occurs after that point. If you are considering withdrawing from a summer term, please speak with our Enrollment Service Center so we can best explain the implications to your financial aid.
